Questions & Answers
We do not offer tiny house builds for groups of volunteers.
If you are solely interested in building tiny houses, reach out to our partner organization Sound Foundations Northwest who build the majority of our tiny houses and host volunteers 6 days a week! You can find their volunteering information here.
LIHI does offer a wide array of different volunteer experiences, however the nature and location of our volunteer events depends on our organization's greatest need at a given time, which fluctuates often. Some examples of previous volunteer work include tiny house caulking and painting, landscaping, setting up units at a developing village, village fence painting, tiny house painting at a village, barbecues, and donations organization amongst others. It can be difficult to predict events far in advance, but we will follow up closer to the event date with a finalized location and tasking.
We love when our volunteers approach service with a servant's heart and remain open to meeting our most urgent needs! Reach out to us at volunteer.program@lihi.org to schedule a group volunteer event.
While the majority of our events are group oriented, we have ongoing opportunities to serve at a permanent supportive housing building and the Urban Rest Stops. Check out the details and how to sign up here.
We are also always looking for individuals motivated to donate and share their time and talents! Picture yourself leading enrichment events such as engaging sessions in financial literacy, getting crafty with arts and crafts, finding your zen in yoga, grooving to the rhythm in dance, lending a helping hand with homework, whipping up delicious dishes in cooking tutorials, crafting killer resumes, and much more! If you're fueled by a desire to make a positive impact and spread joy in your community, we want YOU! No formal qualifications required, just a heart full of enthusiasm and a willingness to support others. Reach out to us at volunteer.program@lihi.org to get involved and make a difference! Sites available across King & Pierce County with typical availability from 8am-6pm
No not at all! Whether you are taking on this project on your own or joining our partner organization SFNW, there is no experience needed, just a willingness to be of service and care for your neighbors in need!
We evaluate these on a case by case basis, not all of our projects are apt for younger minds and bodies. We do host many schools throughout the year for service learning and immersion programs. We always make sure that those groups are paired with a project that is accomplishable and provides enrichment and benefit for everyone. If you are part of a school group and interested in volunteering, please reach out to volunteer.program@lihi.org.
Yes! We accept both monetary and in-kind donations! The best way to know where your donation is going is to donate in-kind donations of food, clothing, and hygiene supplies. Please refer to our Donation List for items we do and do not accept and reach out to volunteer.program@lihi.org if you have any questions or want to make arrangements! Monetary donations to LIHI goes to our general fund that will support our current needs at the time, whether that is toiletries for our donation center or operations supplies at our villages.
Tiny House Village may accept donations of unopened and unexpired food and clothes if storage space is available, but reserve the right to refuse any donation. Family villages may also accept kids and baby clothes, toys, and care supplies if space allows.
Donating in-kind donations through the Volunteer Program Donation Center will help funnel your donations to the folks and sites that need them most!
Please refer to our Donation List for items we do and do not accept and reach out to volunteer.program@lihi.org if you have any questions or want to make arrangements!
The URS can accept books, clothes, and toiletries on a case by case basis if storage allows. The Urban Rest Stops do not accept any food donations.
Please call the Urban Rest Stop to make sure they can accept your donations. Otherwise, you can donate to our Donation Center that serves our clients and residents across all our properties. Reach out to volunteer.program@lihi.org for more information!
Take a look at our Construction Hub to determine if this project is the right fit for your group! Typically, the material kits range from $4,500-5,500. We will order and deliver all the supplies needed to the build location. LIHI does not provide a space to build the house, so your group needs a space (like a driveway or parking lot) where a truck could come by and pick up the finished tiny house. Build time depends on group size and skill level, but be prepared to spend at least a month or two on the project. Please make sure to give our Resource Hub a thorough read in order to understand our construction guide and other building resources. Once you confirm you would like to move forward with the build process, please fill out this form! Please reach out to volunteer.program@lihi.org with any questions!
We have ad hoc opportunities to use your voice and advocate for policy and legislation as it relates to shelters and housing. Visit our Advocacy page to sign up for our advocacy blasts. We have opportunities to testify in person or online as well as through letter writing campaigns at the local, county, and state levels.
It takes a village to run a village! Every tiny house village has a Community Advisory Committee (CAC). CACs are formed from the surrounding neighbors, businesses, and community stakeholders at each village to discuss ideas, concerns, or questions raised by the community and provide advisory feedback and input to staff on operations and services. For more information about serving on the CAC, contact Community Engagement Manager, Marta Kidane at marta.kidane@lihi.org or 206-858-0734.
